Relaxin , a member of the insulin superfamily has been shown to expressed in porcine adipose tissue Domest Anim Endocrinol. 2005 Jul;29(1):186-92 and may have a role in appetite regulation.
The insulin-Like-Peptide, Relaxin-3 (INSL-7) J Biol Chem. 2003 Dec 12;278(50):50765-70 is expressed in the brainstem (nucleus incertus) from where neurons project to the hypothalamus. Endocrinology. 2005 Aug;146(8):3295-300 Relaxin-3 as well as GPCR135 J Biol Chem. 2003 Dec 12;278(50):50754-64 and LGR7 receptors J Pharmacol Exp Ther. 2005 May;313(2):677-87 which bind Relaxin-3 are expressed in the PVN (paraventricular nucleus) of the hypothalamus which is a well recognised site involved with appetite regulation. Injection of human relaxin-3 (H3) to satiated rats centrally (intracerebroventricular or into the PVN) significantly increased food intake within an hour of administration. Endocrinology. 2005 Aug;146(8):3295-300 without inducing changes in hypothalamic neuropeptide Y, proopiomelanocortin, or AgRP mRNA expression. The physiological role if any played by Relaxin in appetite control remains to be clarified.
